Recently, many of my friends have asked me, “How can I teach my child’s Science? The Science that my child is learning now is so different from what I learnt in the past”
Due to the many requests from friends for tips to teach their children’s Science, I have thus agreed when SG Teachers approach me to write a series about Singapore Primary Science.
For this series, I will start with an introduction of what students are expected to know, the examination format, the learning resources and some strategies on how to study Science.
For the current Science Syllabus, students are being tested on the 2 main assessment objectives stated below:
Assessment Objectives
- Knowledge with Understanding
Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific facts, concepts and principles.
- Application of Knowledge and Process
Students must be able to achieve the following skills
- apply scientific facts, concepts and principles to new situations.
- use one or a combination of the following basic processes and skills:
Singapore’s Ministry of Education advocates that teachers provide opportunities for students to use concepts and integrate skills and processes to inquire things and phenomena around them. Students are expected to master 11 skills and 3 processes as shown in the table below.
