My child is in P1 this year. The school has organised a parent session for us to find out more about the changes.
I wonder if we express our unhappiness, will the school feedback to MOE? Then will MOE listen to us?

Yes Mandy. It will definitely benefit those scoring between 45 to 49. Under the old system, they are banded together with the 30+ but under the new system, they are banded with the 50+ and 60+.

For those who are scoring from 60 to 64, the new system will greatly disadvantage them. Thus, if children are now scoring in the 60s+, I believe these parents and teachers will try to get them to score at least 65 to move up a band.

With the new scoring system, many students will get the same score. So there will likely be balloting for a lot of students. So this will lead to more stress for both students  and parents.

This table shows how the new system is not good. The current A grade now become AL4.
The current B grade become AL6, which is equivalent to a failure grade.

Think the changes are unlikely to reduce stress among parents and students. Especially for those who wants to go to the top schools. They will be worried that more students will score the same band as them. Thus, they have to work even harder to ensure they get AL1 for all 4 subjects. Those who are currently scoring between 80 to 90, parents and teachers will also want to push them to get 90. Thus, parents may send their kids who are already doing well for more tuition to make sure they score above 90.

The only good thing about this new system is the pupils's raw score in each subject will reflect his level of competency in each subject. Not like in the past it is compared with pupils in the same cohort. The marks now will not be moderated. So if every pupils scored 90, all will get AL1.

It seems under this new system it's worse, students need to be good in all subjects. It seems current T-score system is better. At least if a child is weak in Maths and Science for example, but strong in languages,  it's still possible to get a high overall T-score as opposed to a very bad high score under the new system. Just read an article in the papers that narrates a good example of a 220 and 256 score, with the 256 score student being steamed to NA but the 220 student going to Express instead!

Hi Yvonne,
Kiasu spore parents will still stay kiasu. With the ambiguous and non-tranparent new system, parents will be even more anxious.
A used to be from 75 to 90. Whether you get 75 or get 90, it is still A. Now it is spread across 3 bands. Thus, parents will feel even more pressure for their kids to do well. That's my personal view.

Ha ha, i think for sure more parents will sign up their kids for enrichment.

Think Berries and Tian Hsia and Mind Stretcher and TLL are the happiest now.

I think another option for parents now to avoid their children having to face the cruel fate of the balloting system is to help their child get a place through DSA. More parents will be looking for info regarding DSA and how their child can get a place through DSA.
For children who are not strong academically, I suppose there are schools who also admit children through Arts, Music and Sports.
Does this mean that there will be more business for enrichment schools?

It is really very strange. How come MOE has the idea that having a banding system will make pupils focus on their own learning and not compare with their peers?

Having such an uncertain banding system will only make parents and teachers push their children/pupils push to the next level. Cos every point counts now not like the current system where the scoring is more transparent.

I can feel the stress now. My child is in P1. She is not doing so well in Chinese. I used to hear from friends that if Chinese not good, it is not crucial if other subjects are good as overall will still be alright. Right now, my child is scoring about 60 to 70 for Chinese.  I guess if I don't do something about her Chinese, she will be getting AL 6 or even 7 for Chinese. Should I send her for Chinese enrichment? Or maybe engage Chinese tutor?

They claimed that it will help to reduce the stress. But I don't see how it can reduce the stress.
Many pupils will have the same band of results and it will lead to balloting.

How can balloting be fair? What criteria are you going to based the balloting on?
What if my child is very unlucky? Get no place for the balloting for the choice of schools that was chosen.

This is worst than buying HDB flat.

Why did they take away the T-score system and came out with a worst system?
Does the people working in MOE have any brains?

Instead of tackling the source of the problem, they revamped the system and came out with a even more stressful and unfair system.
Can someone please talk to the people who came out with this system?
Dear Minister, this is so very disappointing. I hope this is not your idea.

I am very thankful that I have no children who will be in the new system. The new system seem to be worst than the current system.

I wonder what MOE is thinking. Or what is wrong with the thinking of the people who came out with this new scoring system?

Can't they see that it will make parents even more stressed out as now all the subjects become equally important?
