Survival Tip 12: Cruising smoothly through the ENI screening test
Learning Support Programme for Mathematics (LSM)
I have written about the Learning Support Programme for Math (LSM) in Tip 6. For those who did not read the earlier tip, here is a short introduction about the Learning Support Programme for Mathematics (LSM). LSM is an early intervention programme aimed at providing additional support and intervention for P1 pupils who are identified to be weak in basic numeracy skills. Its objective is to equip the pupils with basic numeracy skills. For more information, please read Tip 6.
For this tip, I will like to share with you about the likely items that the students will be tested when they do the ENI screening test. Upon interviewing my nephews, nieces, my own child, his classmates and some of my friends’ children, I found out that during the ENI screening test, they were tested on these areas:
1) Completing AB patterning
2) Counting number of objects within 10
3) Matching numbers within 10 to their corresponding word
4) Knowing what is more
5) Knowing what is less/fewer
6) Completing number patterns
These are basic numeracy skills that all pre-schools in Singapore will have covered by K2. Thus, if your child has been attending a pre-school regularly, your child should have no problems doing well for the ENI screening test.
However, you may have to remind your child to listen to the instructions of the teacher conducting the test carefully, as there may not be any written instructions written on the paper. I heard of children who did not do well for the test even though they are quite bright. Thus, most likely they did not listen correctly or were careless.
If you are still worried, attached is a sample paper of the ENI questions that I have complied. It may not be exactly the same as the school paper as I have not seen it. However, I try to make it similar to the school paper from what I gathered from the children. Hope you will find it useful.
