The Pre-Primary 1 Parents Must-Have:

The P1 Parents’ Survival Guide to Primary School

Being a mother of a Primary (Elementary) school student and having been a teacher in a Primary (Elementary) school in Singapore, I will like to share with you about how you can prepare your child in the years before your child enter primary school. In this series of tips, I will be writing about some areas that you should look into years before your child enters primary school.

Survival Tip 4: Social and emotional adjustment.

In order to know whether your child is developed socially and emotionally, ask yourself if your child is:

  • happy and comfortable with himself and with others.
  • keen to learn, curious and willing to listen.
  • sociable and able to relate well with others
  • has the willingness to share
  • has the willingness to take turns with others
  • has developed good hygiene and self-care habits.

If these abilities and attitudes mentioned above have not been fully observed in your child, you may need to seek advice from medical or professional experts to see if your child needs any intervention, needs extra effort if he enters primary school or is not suitable to enter a mainstream primary school.

You must also prepare your child emotionally to face the primary school days ahead by

  • preparing him for the challenges that he will faced by talking to him about what lies ahead.
  • bringing him for a visit to the primary school that he is going to.
  • letting your child knows that you will always be there to support and encourage him. Whatever challenges and difficulties that he will be facing, you will be there for him.

I hope that the above tips will help you in preparing your child for primary school. There may be challenges ahead but don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
