The Pre-Primary 1 Parents Must-Have:
The P1 Parents’ Survival Guide to Primary School
Being a mother of a Primary (Elementary) school student and having been a teacher in a Primary (Elementary) school in Singapore, I will like to share with you about how you can prepare your child in the years before your child enter primary school. In this series of tips, I will be writing about some areas that you should look into years before your child enters primary school.
Survival Tip 2: Grasp of simple Mathematical concepts
Is your child able to:
- recite and count up to 10 (preferably up to 20)
- write numerals from 1 to 10
- recognise the corresponding English word for the numerals from 1 to 10
- arrange 1 to 10 in sequence
- match the numeral to the correct number of objects
- recognise which number is bigger/smaller
- recognise which group of objects is more/fewer
- add up to 10 using manipulatives
- subtract up to 10 using manipulatives
- understand the concepts of counting, sorting and grouping
If your child is able to do the above, he will be able to cruise through the Early Numeracy Indicator (ENI) Screening test which will be conducted in the first few weeks of school. (refer to Tip 10 and 12 for more information about ENI)
You might want to note that unlike the rote learning you might be familiar with that focused on the application of specific techniques for solving math problems, the new Primary Math syllabus focuses on how much the child actually understands the fundamental concepts. Thus, in order for your child to ace Primary 1 Math, your child needs to be able to apply the concepts and apply it to the various math problems. Thus, make it a point for your child to understand the Math concepts instead of just doing rote learning. Then, your child will be able to do well for Primary School Math.
