Using Multiple Concept

As the name itself, you will know this concept will only be applied if it require to do multiplication problem. Some of the problem which your kid when encounter (even in later part of primary 1 or earlier primary 2 for Singapore Math) statement as ' twice as much" , 'five time as many' , 'three times lessor', etc.....

We are going to show an exemple how this concept can be applied.

Alice is twice as old as Ben. Ben is three time as old as Celia. If their total age is 100 years old. How old is each of them?

Firstly, translate the statements into a model. Now draw the bars which represent the three people as shown below:

Alice
Ben
Celia
Total: 70

In fact, identify the lowest which is Celia, so her age is represent by 1 unit. Next is Ben whose age is 3 times of Celia, so the number of units to represent Ben's age is 3. Finally, Alice is two time of Ben's age, so it is 3 x 2 = 6 units.

For doing this question, the kid should be familar with multiplication and division concept. So the solution is simply get 1 unit value:

6 + 3 + 1 = 10 units
10 Units = 70 Years = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10
1 Units = 70 / 10 = 7 So for Celia, her age is represent by 1 unit so her age is 7 years old. For Ben, his age is represent by 3 units so his age is 3 x 7 = 21 years old. Finally is Alice =
70 - (21 + 7) = 70 - 28 = 42 years old.
or 6 x 7 = 42 years old.

To check, sum all the age (42 + 21 + 7) = 70.

It is crucial to check by summing up all the individual values so to confirm it is most likely the correct answer.
