Building good character in your children is hard work, but you can make things easier by living the values you teach, making them feel like they're the center of your world, employing discipline strategies whose purpose you can easily explain, and using different media as another source for learning.

Nothing is more important than character in helping us to withstand the many stresses, trials and tribulations that life eventually hands to all of us. The best indicator for how people tend to solve problems, overcome difficulties and learn from their experiences is the strength of their character. Values including honesty, national pride, respect, integrity and responsibility are character traits that are very important to teach to children. Many organizations have programs that can help youths build character including schools, churches, and community groups, as well as girls homes. Of course, you can allow your child to attend or participate in at least one of these organizations to help build character. The biggest factor in character development will be what goes on inside your home and within your family. This article will teach you some skills that might come in handy in building character in your children.

It is important for you to believe in the values that you want to teach your child

Being that which you would like to see embodies in your children is the most effective way. If you demonstrate a respectful attitude toward authority figures, your children will follow suit. Remember that children are heavily influenced by anyone they care about - friends, family, relatives - and they will attempt to emulate the behavior of those whom they admire most. Giving children consistent teachings is very important for parents.

Show your children that you care

It is important that children are reminded that discipline means that the parents really care and are invested in teaching them values. When children understand the underlying principles behind the things you teach them, it will be easier for them to follow your lead and not rebel against you. By reaching out and connecting more effectively with your children, they will feel that you are concerned for their welfare and it will also make teaching them easier.

Explain the reasons behind the strategies of discipline you use

When children misbehave or make wrong decisions, it is important that parents employ a form of discipline. This will make children feel that they should always be responsible for their behavior and decisions and that there are consequences for their actions, both good and bad. But as a parent, simply punishing your child for his or her wrongdoings can be extremely counterproductive if this is all you do. Not only should they explain about how the child violated a specific value, they should inform as to why such disciplinary measures must be taken.

You may benefit from incorporating all different kinds of media into your learning methods

In order to reach out to as many students as possible, schools use a variety of media including books, visual aids and documentaries. Parents can use a variety of media to teach their children good character. There are many books and movies that exhibit excellent character principles. Parents can watch them with their kids, after which they can discuss the moral lessons that are contained in them.

It is not the job of institutions such as schools or churches to build character in your children. Parents are primarily responsible for how well their children develop character.
