In this era of technological age, it is essential for our future generations not only to know how to use the applications, but also to understand how to utilise them in creative ways. With this new necessity in mind, coding will become as essential as reading, writing and calculation, and it should even be included in the school curriculum.
As a parent of 2 sons, I want to give them the right tools, thought processes and education to enable them to thrive in an entrepreneurial and innovation-led environment in the future.
Learning coding will enable our children to develop critical thinking skills and problem solving processes that are not only important in computer science, but also in life. It teaches them how to look at the bigger picture, and to break down big challenges into smaller and more manageable tasks. Other than just relying on environmental perception, they are able to make logical connections which will help them learn how to properly analyse different situations. This type of skill is necessary for everyone to have, not just those who want to pursue software engineering in the future. Other than it being applicable professionally, it also helps one to achieve big and overwhelming goals in their lives. You get to think of the smaller steps you need to take in order to get you closer to your goals, which gives you more drive and focus.
I am an IT professional (specialised in software engineering) with more than 18 years of experience as a software engineer, system analyst, IT business consultant in various domain (financial, real estate, manufacturing, government, human resource, etc.). I also have much experience in training on software related projects. I have also conducted part-time IT courses with IT schools.
Currently, I am a full time, free-lance IT trainer for coding classes for children and teenagers. I enjoy teaching coding for children/teenagers. Being able to make my students understand the logic and develop their analytical thinking give me joy and satisfaction.
