How to do well in Singapore Primary Science- A Teacher’s Perspective

What a Student should do to do well in Science

  1. Build on Science knowledge daily
    • Pay attention in class (Take down notes)

    • Read the Textbook, Activity Book, Science Guide Book

    • Highlight the key concepts

    • Write Notes (can concept map, mind map or graphic organizer) on what you have learnt

    • Remember the concepts

    • Take note of how the questions in the worksheets/tests are to be answered

  2. Science Process Skills
    • Apply the various Science processes and skills when doing experiments/ investigations in school or at home

    • Think about what are the Science processes and skills that should be used when answering Science questions
  3. Revising for Science tests and examinations
    • Draw a mindmap, concept map or graphic organiser on the topic

    • Review your school notes, textbooks, workbooks, worksheets, past year assessment papers, current test papers and revision papers

    • Make a list of major concepts that can be used in the test/examination

    • Do revision tests to test yourself

    • Note the mark allocation for each question and each part of the question
  4. How to Answer Science Questions Correctly?
    • Read every question with carefully

    • Underline or highlight keywords in the questions

    • Think of the topic(s) the question is asking about

    • Recall the concepts of the topic(s)

    • Recall the keywords of the concepts/topics

    • Apply the concepts

    • Do “working”

    • Make sure what you have written is answering the question specifically

    • Check your answer after completing every question

  5. How long should my answers be?
    • Look for key words in the questions such as

      Those that begin with: Name, Identify, List, State, Give…

      Requires short answers

      Those that begin with : Explain, Why, State/Give a reason, What is the reason, How can you tell …..

      Requires longer answers with more details to be provided

    • Marks allocated

      The more marks a question is normally means there is more required for that question.

    • Lines given

      The more lines given to a question normally means more writing is required for that question.

    • Read the Instructions carefully

      Are you required to circle, label the diagram, draw arrows......?

The above is just a basic guide for parents and students to take note if they want to do well for Singapore Primary Science. In order to do excel in Science, students must be willing to put in effort and be committed to gain the necessary knowledge and master the Science process skills required.
